HINDU FUNERALS IN SINGAPORE

According to Hindu funeral traditions, the body rests at home and has to be cremated within 24 hours after death. Cremation has been a tradition in Hinduism so it is believed that cremation serves to detach the soul from the physical body after death (Raj, 2008). The son breaks the skull of the deceased when the body is burnt so as to allow the skull to burn thoroughly as well as to release the soul, which Hindus believe, inhabits in the forehead. However, children are buried instead of cremated in Hindu tradition. A cleansing bath is conducted and the body will be freshly clothed. Flowers and garlands usually decorate the body. Purificatory rituals and mantras are performed with the body facing either north or south. The bereaved spouse will be located at one side so that friends and families can pay their due respects to them before doing so to the body, after the rituals and mantras . Open caskets are the norm in Hindu funerals and those paying their respects are expected to view the body .
