INTRODUCTION TO TAOISM
Taoism, which originated in China more than 2000 years ago, has about 31 million followers worldwide. The founder was believed to be Lao-tzu, who developed a set of principles of the universe known as the Tao (meaning the Way), in which all the things in the world are filled with complementary forces, Yin and Yang (meaning negative energy and positive energy). For example, there is light and dark, hot and cold, and good and bad. However, in today’s context, Taoist ideas can no longer be easily differentiated as many of the ideas derived from other Chinese schools of thoughts, such as Buddhism, are being incorporated.
In Taoism, the Tao is not a God to be worshipped but a system of guidance to be observed. However, they do have deities that they worship in Taoist temples. The heart of Taoism aims to promote achieving harmony or union with nature, pursuit of spiritual immortality, being virtuous and self development.
Some of their rituals and practices includes meditation, offerings to deities, feng shui, and reading and chanting of scriptures.
